Beech and Maple Classes go Potty for Pottery

This term the pupils in Beech and Maple classes have been learning about pottery through the ages.

The children have been investigating how pottery has changed over time, starting from when fire was first discovered. They've explored different types of pottery, examined how designs and uses developed, and placed their findings on a historical timeline to show progression through the ages.

Both classes have recently enjoyed visiting Hungerford Antiques Arcade, where the children explored the vast range of pottery there for sale.

Maple Class carefully chose their favourite pieces of pottery and photographed them and then sketched them during art lessons, developing their observation and drawing skills. They also met Jane, a stallholder at the Arcade, who gave them some great information about some of the artifacts.

During their visit, Beech Class paid close attention to how aged the pottery looked and carefully observed the intricate details used to decorate each piece. This experience really helped bring their learning to life, and the children enjoyed discussing their observations. At the end of their trip the children were all given an old coin each.

To round off this half term Beech and Maple Classes will be having a go at throwing their own pieces of pottery, using stoneware clay, on a wheel at the Perfectly Potty Winchester Pottery. They're really looking forward to trying something different and learning a new skill!
