It was a very exciting day for Maple Class last Friday (5th December), when they met and fed the two Capybaras they had adopted at Beale Wildlife Park as their prize from coming third in the Park's Halloween Scarecrow Competition.
Capybaras are the world’s largest rodents, growing up to 1.3m long and weighing 35–79 kg. The lesser capybara is smaller, reaching about 1m and 28 kg. Native to South America, they are closely related to guinea pigs and rock cavies. Their name comes from the Tupi word ka'apiûara ("grass-eater"), while their scientific name means "water pig" in Greek.
Sharon and Gary, the Park's Capybara pair, are experts at making a splash in their aquatic habitat. These gentle giants are happiest when they’re swimming and socializing. By adopting them both, Maple Class are helping to keep their environment vibrant and their lives enriched.
