Armistice Day, or Remembrance Day as it's also known, marks the very day that World War One ended in 1918.
Remembrance honours those who serve to defend our democratic freedoms and way of life.
We unite across faiths, cultures and backgrounds to remember the service and sacrifice of the Armed Forces community from United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. We will remember them.
We remember the sacrifice of the Armed Forces community from United Kingdom and the Commonwealth.
We pay tribute to the special contribution of families and of the emergency services.
We acknowledge innocent civilians who have lost their lives in conflict and acts of terrorism.
Elm and Willow classes have enjoyed learning more about The First World War. They have been looking at literature, especially the work of famous War poet Wilfred Owen, how died on November 4th 1918 just days before the War ended. Some of the class wrote their own poems in the theme and style of War poetry.
Dawn
Boots filled with mud
Hands covered in blood
It's dark out just before dawn,
People shouting, guns are drawn.
Time stands still on this earthly plain
Writing down words, trying to keep sane
A World, far, far from home
Tired, tired, to the bone.
Sophie, November 2025
Elm and Willow also made Spam pie, with mashed potato and carrot, which would have been a delicacy the, especially if it was hot. They may have just eaten the meat from the tin in desperation. It made the class very grateful for the variety of food we have today.
Some of Elm and Willow classes have very kindly made a range of Remembrance Day Poppy items that staff and students have been able to choose in return for a small donation. If any parents or carers would like any please pop over an email (info@oaklands-school.co.uk). We will be wearing them on Tuesday, when the class visits the War Memorial in Hungerford to join the Remembrance ceremony and silence.
On Tuesday 4th November, as part of his Cadet service, Jamie collected donations and gave out poppies in aid of the Royal British Legion. Jamie represented the Berkshire Army Cadet Force 17 Platoon by wearing his Cadet uniform. He has also participated in Remembrance Day collections with 17 Platoon in Reading and will be on parade this Sunday. We all thought Jamie looked very smart in his uniform.
This week Beech class made a beautiful wreath and Maple class made wonderful poppy suncatchers to commemorate Remembrance Day.
We've also placed memorial crosses outside school in our grounds.
Today (11th November) Hazel class made their own beautiful poppies ready to mark Armistice Day at 11am with a class silence.
And students from Ash, Elm and Willow classes and staff paid their respects at the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month at the Armistice Day ceremony at the War Memorial in Hungerford. A student from Elm class and Marketing and Comms Manager, Chula, laid a wreath on behalf of the school.
We will remember them.
