Yesterday (Wednesday 7th May) Willow class were really pleased to welcome ARK - Action for the River Kennet into their classroom for the morning. ARK exists to protect and improve the River Kennet, its tributaries and the River Pang. They work at a catchment scale to improve the health of these rivers. When healthy these precious rivers thrive with a rich diversity of native wildlife species, they are an essential resource for communities; however our rivers are under a range of pressures.
Willow class learned all about the two chalk streams in our local area and the wildlife that calls them home. And they discovered how important it is for us all to take care of our environment. During the session Willow class also found out about water efficiency and carried out an experiment to see how toilet tissue paper reacts when it's put into water compared with wet wipes. When the class put the paper into a bottle of water and shook it vigorously it broke down really quickly and easily, whereas nothing happened to the wet wipe at all. That's why it's really important never to put wipes wipes down the loo!
Willow class are really looking forward to visiting the River Kennet for themselves later this term.
