This half term Maple class have been learning all about Ancient Egypt, focussing on the River Nile, the 3 Kingdoms of Egypt, which refers to the three periods of centralized power and high civilization: the Old Kingdom, Middle Kingdom, and New Kingdom and the Pharaohs, who were the divine kings of ancient Egypt.
As part of their learning, Maple visited Ufton Court in Reading, where they experienced life as part of the Royal Egyptian Household, gaining an understanding of how Egyptian beliefs explained the world around them. In particular, the children experienced first-hand the trials of living and dying in Egypt, witnessing the effect that the royal death of Pharaoh Hatshepsut had on the society.
The class learnt about the sacred art of embalming and mummification. They helped “wrap” a body, and discovered why Egyptians believed it was so important to preserve the body for the afterlife. It was really interesting to perform the ancient rituals that protected the soul on its journey to eternity!
