Oaklands School Councillors Announced

We have just set up our very own Oaklands School Council.

The establishment of our School Council represents an important commitment to placing pupil voice at the heart of school improvement and everyday decision-making. It is fundamental to empowering our pupils to understand their rights, develop agency and build confidence in advocating for themselves and others.

Pupil voice is recognised as a key component of inclusive practice. It ensures that pupils are not passive recipients of provision, but instead active contributors who influence how the school environment, curriculum, culture and support systems are shaped. Our School Council will provide a structured and authentic space for our pupils to express their views, respond to topics that matter to them and work collaboratively with staff on solutions that lead to positive change.

Furthermore, participation in a council supports the development of a wide range of skills including communication, social interaction, representation, teamwork, problem-solving and leadership. For many pupils with SEND, opportunities to practise these skills in a meaningful and supportive context are particularly valuable and contribute to their broader personal development outcomes.

Creating our School Council also strengthens partnerships between our pupils, staff and leaders, promoting transparency and shared ownership of school priorities. It enhances school culture by ensuring pupil contributions are respected, acted upon and celebrated.

Through this, pupils learn that their voices matter and can lead to real improvement.

What is a School Council?

A School Council is a group of pupils who meet to talk about ideas that help make our school even better

Why do we have one?

  • Because pupils should be listened to.

  • Because your ideas are important.

  • Because you know what it’s like to learn and play here.

What do School Council members do?

They…

  • Listen to other pupils

  • Share ideas at the meeting

  • Help make decisions

  • Tell everyone what happened at the meeting

What will we talk about?

Topics could include:

  • How to make a Green School

  • New clubs and activities

  • Being kind and including everyone

  • Indoor and outdoor spaces

  • School meals

  • Wellbeing and safety

  • Special events and celebrations

What happens to the ideas?

  • Good ideas become plans.

  • Plans become changes.

  • Changes make our school even better!

Establishing our School Council will create an authentic platform for pupil voice, co-production and democratic participation within our school. It will provide purposeful opportunities for students to influence school life, build key skills and see the direct impact of their contributions. This initiative will enrich the school community, strengthen inclusive practice and contribute to wider school improvement.
