Oaklands is a purpose built co-educational school for children aged 5 to 16 years with Special Education Needs. Located in Hungerford, West Berkshire, Oaklands plans to open its doors to children in September 2023.
Based at Charnham Park, Tealgate, the school has been created specifically to provide a unique, contemporary and enjoyable learning experience for children with additional needs. The school setting includes one to one teaching, small class sizes, and therapeutic support, alongside a balanced curriculum with a range of extra-curricular activities. Oaklands provides a welcoming and friendly environment for pupils with individual learning profiles, including Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC) and associated communication, language, social, emotional, and mental health needs.
It is anticipated that all children attending the school will have an EHCP (Education and Health Care Plan) in place, and will reside within a daily commutable distance of the school.
Chair of the Board, Dr Julie Smith, said: "We know that there is a definite need for SEN school places in the area, so we are hard at work getting the site ready for our planned opening in September 2023. The school is ideally located to be able to welcome children from across West Berkshire and the surrounding areas. "
Headteacher, Megan Stratton, said: "Oaklands is a small, nurturing school with a family feel. We are working closely with the Local Authorities to provide places for children who require a specialist, personalised approach to education. Our approach will allow each child to grow and develop at a pace that suits them, building on their own unique strengths and talents".
Cllr Heather Codling, portfolio holder for Children, Education and Young People’s Services, said: “We are delighted to be welcoming another SEN school to West Berkshire. Our SEN students will benefit from the school’s one to one teaching along with its support for each individual.”
